Ministry of Power and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) on 29 May, 2016 launched India’s first integrated web portal designed to promote and mainstream Net Zero Energy Buildings (NZEB) in India. The portal (www.nzeb.in) was launched by Shri Pradeep Kumar Pujari, Secretary, Ministry of Power, and Ambassador Mr Jonathan Addleton, USAID Mission Director to India.
The portal (www.nzeb.in) was designed to promote and mainstream Net Zero Energy Buildings (NZEB) in India.
A first of its kind, the portal provides complete information about Net Zero Energy Buildings those that generate as much energy as they use – as well as how to achieve near-zero energy status through the use of efficient lighting and equipment, integration of renewable energy technologies, and best practice design strategies. In addition, the portal hosts the NZEB Alliance, an industry-wide body set up to drive the Indian markets toward highly energy-efficient buildings.
The Indira Paryavaran Bhavan, Delhi was India’s first net zero energy building that has been constructed with adoption of solar passive design and energy-efficient building materials.
What are NZEBs?
Net or nearly zero energy buildings (NZEB) are highly efficient buildings with extremely low energy demand, which is met by renewable energy sources. Such buildings produce as much energy as they consume, accounted for annually. In order to achieve their net zero energy goals, NZEBs must first sharply reduce energy demand using energy efficient technologies, and then utilize renewable energy sources (RES) to meet the residual demand. In such buildings, efficiency gains enable the balance of energy needs to be supplied with renewable energy technologies. This is the most logical approach to reach NZEB goal.
Benefits of Net Zero Energy Buildings
1. Isolation for building owners from future energy price increases.
2. Increased comfort due to more-uniform interior temperatures (this can be demonstrated with comparative isotherm maps).
3. Reduced requirement for energy austerity.
4. Reduced total cost of ownership due to improved energy efficiency.
5. Reduced total net monthly cost of living.
