Speaking on the event of signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), on 20 May in New Delhi, between the Project Management Institute (PMI) India and Indian Academy of Highway Engineers (IAHE)the Minister for Road Transport and Highways and Shipping said that he hoped that the training could lead to construction of quality roads at lesser cost.
The MoU between Project Management Institute and IAHE has been signed in a bid to raise project management skills of trainees of IAHE. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MORTH) is hopeful that the training would result in a better road design and execution of the programmes/schemes that ultimately would decrease the incidence of accidents on highways.
In course of his speech Shri Niti Gadkari, the Minister for Road Transport and Highways, made an appeal to the persons working in the field of road construction to remain prepared to accept, learn and apply new technology, innovation and international best practices and indispensable research for it is their responsibility to take the country forward and compete globally. The Ministry further exhorted the institutions involved in imparting training to acquire the best communicators from IITs and abroad in order to make sure that the highway project managers be imparted excellent skills.
Objective of MoU between Project Management Institute and IAHE
The objective of the MoU between two most prestigious academic entities is to assist Engineers and Project Managers in raising their knowledge and sharpen their skills in the field of project management and execution, that plays a very important role in the successful accomplishment of infrastructure projects which are linked to the road transport and highways.
Speaking on behalf of Project Management Institute, its country Director Shri Raj Kalady said that the aim of the Project Management Institute would be to enhance the skills of personnel who were working on different projects under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MORTH). He further informed that as the first step to accomplish the overall objective of developing a sound project management culture the Project Management Institute has decided for holding workshops, training programmes and certification of personnel.

About IAHE (Indian Academy of Highway Engineers)
Indian Academy of Highway Engineers (IAHE), formerly known as NITHE, is the apex training institute established to detect and impart training needs of Highway and Bridge Engineers in the country. Set up as an institution in 1983 the IAHE’s primary objective is to accomplish the need for training highway engineers at their entry level and during their service.
IAHE holds regular training programmes for Engineers and highway sector professionals belonging to Central Government organizations, State Government organizations, Public Sector Units, Private Sector, Stake holders of multi-lateral agencies like World Bank, Asian Development Bank, etc.
About Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MORTH)
Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, an apex organization under the Central Government, is assigned with the task of formulating and administering policies for Road transport, National Highways and Transport Research with an aim to enhancing the mobility and efficiency of the road-transport system in the country.
The Ministry has two wings – Roads wing and Transport wing
Roads wing: The wing deal with development and maintenance of National Highway in the country. It imparts technical and financial support to State Governments for the development of safe roads and the roads of inter-state connectivity and economic importance. It also evolves standards specifications for roads and bridges in the country.
Transport wing deals with matter linked to Road transport. Its main responsibilities involve:

Contribution of MORTH to the Current MOU
Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has sanctioned delivery of specifically structured course on Road Safety Audit by IAHE, Noida in association with India chapter of International Road Federation (IRF) and Australian Road Research Board (ARRB).
MORTH is funding the course, substantially enough, to the limit of about 55% of course fee, applicable to both public and private sector participants. While the Ministry’s contribution is about Rs. 1.20 lakhs per participant, participants or participating agencies would have to pay a fee of about Rs. 1 lakh.
IAHE has initiated a fully residential course of 6 weeks duration. The first course is planned to start on 23rdMay,2016 (today) at IAHE, Noida (UP).
