The order is defined by the President of India (president’s Office) and maintained by Home affairs Ministry.
The order has no legal validation and this protocol is followed in ceremonial protocols and other government functions dedicated or taken in this order.

Note :
- In the order of precedence of Indian Officials list planning commission chairman has hierarchy and it has been recently replaced by NITI Aayog
- Planning Commission has been replaced by NITI Aayog, MHA hasn’t yet updated the Indian Order of Precedence.
- Planning Commission of India dissolved in the year 2014 and replaced by NITI Aayog (A thick Tank of decision making Body) chaired by Prime Minister as chairman of NITI Aayog and vice president and other are appointed by prime minister.
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi formed three sub-group of Chief Ministers within in NITI Aayog while he was chaired the 1st meeting of governing council of NITI Aayog in New Delhi on 8th February 2015
